When many people think of functional training, they envision traditional “old school” weight lifting exercises that have many limitations as far as range of motion. These conventional, linear movements may not exactly pertain to real life actions, and many of times can lead to injury, which can limit your range of motion even further.

Many times, trainers focus on ‘burning-out’ the muscle group during their workout, to the point where the client is limping out of the gym; however, functional training is geared towards real-life movements natural to your body. For example: Picking up your child over-head, using your own body weight for balance and stability, and even practicing a movement created to enhance the sport you play. The military and law enforcement are also great examples of needing functionality in their workout. With the heavy armory and equipment, they must wear and carry, being incredibly sore from their workout could possibly decrease their response time in an emergency.

When you strengthen your entire body, your muscles are able to work better synergistically with each other, and your daily routine will flow much easier. The goal is to function as a well-oiled machine. Therefore, training your body in different planes of motion is helpful to your body as a whole.

“Why is functional movement the latest craze? Several reasons! One reason being the risk of injury is lessened, and the mobility of the muscles group increases for a overall win-win.”

The American Council on Exercise (ACE) defines functional strength training as “performing work against resistance in such a manner that the improvements in strength directly enhance the performance of movements so that an individual’s activities of daily living are easier to perform.”

Since muscle mass decreases 30-50% between the ages of 30-80 years old, we NEED to functionally-strengthen our body, not only from the loss of muscle mass, but also to strengthen and protect our bones, as they weaken with age.
